Maggie Smith

A life-long athlete and member of the US Army, Maggie Smith became serious about running following the birth of her daughter, Emily on June 29, 2008 when she found herself suffering from post-partum depression. Running helped her beat depression and literally got her back on her feet much to the joy of her biggest fan, her husband, Patrick. Maggie faced a major challenge last year when she discovered that she has the BRCA 2 mutation, which puts me at a high risk of developing women’s cancer.

She signed up for the Marine Corps Marathon as her comeback race and underwent a bilateral prophylactic mastectomy in June 2009 and trained herself back to run a 3:22 at MCM which qualified her for Boston and got her a guaranteed entry into the ING New York City Marathon in November. She began training for Boston following a total hysterectomy on her 30th birthday, November 25, 2009. She also ran the Sun Trust Richmond Marathon this past year with the Runner’s World Magazine Marathon Challenge and made it into some of their slide shows and video coverage of the event.
