Awards shows these days seem to need to one-up themselves each year, dazzling audiences with new attractions and ever more spectacular entertainment. And so it was refreshing to attend the 2015 Best of Washington Running party where Pacers Running trotted out a classic, tried and true act that we have all come to love: RunWashington Magazine Editor, Charlie Ban, plus a few cocktails.
The Best of Washington Running is a poll voted on by area runners that determines the year’s best local races, running stores, coaches, and more. And, every year, members of the local run community assemble to celebrate the awards.
This year’s event began as the invite-only crowd gathered at Birch and Barley. The restaurant was rented out for the night and drinks and appetizers were on offer. A large sign was on display at the entrance so attendees could scan the list of winners, getting a sneak peek before the official awards presentation to come. As well, the latest issue of RunWashington Magazine featuring the poll results, was available around the room.
After allowing plenty of time for mingling, the big moment arrived. We knew things were on the right track/ about to get wild when Kathy Dalby, CEO of Pacers Running, climbed on a chair to toast the crowd and introduce the event’s host.
Charlie then came forward, and it became apparent he had downed just the right amount of liquid courage as he proceeded to delight the audience with jokes and anecdotes.
The winners came up one by one to receive their award– the coveted Best of Washington Running plaque.
Highlights for Pacers Running included being named both best VA run specialty store (Alexandria) and best DC run specialty store (Logan Circle) with Store Managers, Joe and Frank, respectively, accepting the awards.
We also took home the prize for best 5k (Jingle All the Way 5k) which our Race Director, Lisa, happily received as Charlie noted that “it blew the others away this year!”
We are honored to have taken home these accolades.
Thanks to Elyse Braner for organizing the event and to our hosts, Birch and Barley.
Thanks as well to all in our community who voted for us and make running in the DC area great!
It was a fantastic event and our esteemed editor Charlie really stole the show.
