Thank you to the runners of the Pacers Running//GRC-New Balance team for sharing this story with the local running community. Nina’s life should be celebrated with a run through the campus of a University where she thrived.
The Nina Brekelmans Memorial Scholarship 5K is organized in memory of Nina Brekelmans, a DC-area runner and scholar who passed away in June 2015. Nina was known to approach all aspects of her life with vigor and zeal, be it running, school, or her friendships. Nina was passionate about global affairs, the Middle East, and public service. She was fluent in Arabic and spent time living, studying, and volunteering in Egypt and Jordan. After graduating from Georgetown University in May 2015 with a masters in Arab studies, Nina planned to return to Jordan on a Fulbright scholarship to research women’s running. The Nina Brekelmans Memorial Scholarship 5K will be held on March 19, 2016, at Georgetown University. All donations from the race will contribute directly to a scholarship at Georgetown endowed in Nina’s memory to sustain her legacy of goodwill and women’s empowerment in the Middle East.
