The mission of DC Rise is building community through running by providing safe and inclusive training for all. No matter what your sport of choice is running this summer will give you foundation to get back on the field, the court, and, obviously, the track.
Reach out to your coach, your school, or just sign up for a summer of online workouts led by Coach Rachel McNinch and Coach Desmond Dunham.
This program is completely free and all are welcome to join. The program specifically targets youth in middle and high school and those are the participants we’d like to register on the link below.
Look forward to seeing you in workouts soon and in real life as soon as it is safe!
ABOUT DC RISE
DC Rise Youth Run Crew is supported by members of our local community who want to help you explore both your neighborhood, your community and the power of running. Group training sessions are led by Coach McNinch and Coach D on videos posted on the Pacers Running YouTube channel each Tuesday and Thursday. Want to help lead a workout? We’d love to have you join them. Email [email protected] for more information.
Coach Desmond Dunham coordinates special high school running events and has coached in the DMV for the past 22 years. Desmond is a former Division 1 runner at Howard University and continues to make running an intrical part of his daily routine. Running is what brings him mental and physical joy, and he is excited to impart these same feelings to the members of the DC Rise Youth Run Crew. When he’s not running, he enjoys coaching and hanging out with his two kids.
Rachel McNinch is the Athletic Director and cross country/track coach at BASIS DC, serves on the board and as the cross country/track commissioner for the DC Public Charter School Athletic Association, and has over fifteen years experience coaching with a background in running, swimming, rugby, and dance. She is a passionate coach who believes in the ability to teach life-long lessons, build community, and empower others through DC Rise. Other passions include staying active outdoors, her dogs, and ice cream.
Heather Jeff is an Event Manager at Pacers Run and the mother of two great kids. Heather is a runner and an infrequent racer since she works at most local races. She deeply believes in the transformative power of running and is thrilled to be part of DC Rise Youth Run Crew.
Charlie Ban is the editor in chief of RunWashington. Founded in 1984, RunWashington, formerly the Washington Running Report, is the runner’s source for the D.C. area. Charlie is a life long runner who hails from Pittsburgh, PA.
Irasema Salcido is the founder of Cesar Chavez Public Charter Schools for Public Policy. Irasema assisted in forging a partnership with Pacers Running and the Kenilworth Park Community in 2015 that would offer youth in Wards 7 & 8 more opportunities to run. She is delighted to see the partnership evolve into DC Rise’s virtual summer training program. She hopes that this new program will serve as a start for many young people in DC to pursue running as a sport or as a lifestyle that will bring health and joy to their lives. Irasema herself enjoys running (she just finished her first half-marathon!) and has personally witnessed the personal and career benefits as two of her children have been recruited by colleges for running–she desires the same potential benefits for other children in our city.
